The Yorkshire terrier has a long history behind it. Some people might believe it to be a miniature dog ever since the early years. Actually, it was not always that miniature. This small dog was first developed during the 1800’s in the historical Yorkshire, England. It all began when a group of Scottish workers comes to Yorkshire to look for jobs. They brought along with them a variety of medium sized terriers. The dogs were their secret weapons against rats in both workplace and houses. After some time, the terriers where crossbred with Maltese terriers, Skye Terriers, and Black and Tan terriers.

As time progressed, dog breeders crossed the smallest from each breed thus producing miniature Yorkshire terriers known today. Since then, miniatures have become popularized all over the world especially in the United Kingdom. This terrier’s popularity in the United Kingdom was all because of Huddersfield Ben. He is known as the father of modern Yorkies. Huddersfield Ben was the earliest and most popular Yorkshire terrier to be known by many. His popularity was made possible because of the many shows he had won before his death in 1871. During his time and even until today, his breed is the most sought for terrier.

In the 1870’s, Yorkshire terriers were first seen at the Kennel Club which was an acclaimed dog show. In the year 1886, the club officially registered the Yorkshire terrier breed. As the popularity of the breed soared, the Yorkshire Terrier Club was eventually formed. Its members include those from the upper society most of which were women. Because of the influential members of the club, the Yorkshire terrier’s fame grew thus becoming the dream dog of every breeder. By the year 1932, almost three hundred Yorkshire terriers were registered in the club.

As the years went by, the Yorkshire terrier became even more popular as it was before. It has instantly become the most popular breed in the United Kingdom. It has also earned a spot on the top ten best breed of dogs in the whole world. Its fame has even reached America because of a descendant of Huddersfield Ben. His name was Bradford Harry. The Yorkshire terrier has even made its way on the toy category of the Kennel club. The breed has also traveled its fame to Brisbane, Australia in the year 1872.

Given the great history of Yorkshire Terriers, you would definitely want to have one today. This miniature and adorable breed will definitely please your cravings for a world-class dog!
